Alexander The Gruit
Our brewer Alex wanted to create a beer around foraging, a passion if his.
The base beer is a gruit – a style using herbs and botanicals for bittering and aroma instead of hops. ⠀
The grain bill has lots of rye, oats and wheat in the mash with a touch of crystal malt for colour and body.⠀
Alex went for dry herbs in the boil for bitterness (nettles, hyssop, wormwood and mugwort..hello Harry Potter). The aroma additions were foraged or sourced from Beavertown’s neighbourhood – rose hips were picked along the canal bordering the brewery (only the high-hanging ones, no need to worry), fresh fennel flowers from our neighbours @livingunderonesun , purple sage from Beavertown brewer Ben’s garden and rosemary from the brewery itself. To top it off, 10kg of outstanding honey from a lovely lady who keeps bees near Alex’s house. ⠀
